DL "Low Hat" Block Recognition

Following the "Get-off", every DL players progression is block recognition.  We teach 3 low-hat progression / reaction teaching techniques daily.

*Low-Hat Block Reactions:

1.  OL "Down" - our DL will react to a  down block by squeezing the outside shoulder pad tip of the OL. Our objective is to be violent with our strike squeezzing the OL preventing his shoulders from being square & climbing to the 2nd level. We want to cancel the gap to the inside of   OL with his body. In short we teach - "Down = Squeeze".

2. OL "Drive" - our DL will react to a drive block with a sit - seperate - pull through reaction. Following our get-off we recognize the OL in a drive block / base block our reaction imediately transfers to our core strength. We will sit or sink our hips maintain an athletic base and drive forward followed by a violent pull through. The pull through combines with a catapult of our body to our gap control combined with the OL being slung forward driving his nose into the dirt.  "Drive block = sit / seperate / pull through!

3.  OL "Pull" - Our DL will react to a OL Pull with a grap cloth - follow technique. Following the get-off our DL recognizes a pull by the OL we will imediately grap cloth & follow or grap cloth follow and skinny the back block or pull check by the OL player attempting to secure the release of the puller. "Pull = grap cloth & follow".

*High hat recognition will translate to pass rush techniques & will be covered in a later blog.

Johnny Manziel vs Russell Wilson

Russell Wilson is a fantastic football player. He may be an even better human being. He is not the prototype NFL QB relating to size. He is mobile, athletic and to many the next wave of NFL QBs. Will Wilson help Manziel with his draft status? Manziel is not Russell Wilson. Barry Switzer said it best: Manziel is arrogant, spoiled and has embarressed his team and coaches. Jaworski has said it best. Manziel does not possess the mechanics, read progression or discipline at this point to be a franchise NFL QB. In short Manziel is not Russell Wilson. Wilson was a 3rd round pick. Manziel will be fortunate to duplicate Wilsons draft slot.

LB Play - 3 - 2 Inside LB Play Talbot Defense

Inside Linebacker play in our cover 3 match. Our MLB will be a 3-2 player in our cover 3 match.   The MLB will play gap responsibility playing run 1st. Once the QB has cleared the depth of the RB(#3), and there is no run threat, the MLB will then adjust his drop to the release of #3.  1st job is to identify #3 and alert the outside linebacker to a possible "push" call.   #3 - inside release: MLB will drop on top of #3 maintaining a top down inside hip leverage. His eyes will move from the QBs upfield shoulder to proper leverage  of  #3. #3 - outside release to flat: MLB will make "push" call to alert the outside linebacker to come off his reroute of #2 and expand to flat looking for #3 to flat. MLB will then push to #2s release carrying vertical to top of his zone (12 yards). MLB will wall #2 (keep inside leverage) on #2 and ping-pong his head and eyes back to QB to identify QBs upfield shoulder & elbow. *Communication is vit...
