Defensive Line Get-offs

Defensive Line
Teaching Progression

Fundamentals

 *Get-off

1.Key the ball – Strike when ball moves; (All drills will begin with ball movement when possible)
2.Attack with inside foot; short 6 inch power step, looking to get 3 steps before the down hand and assume a great strike position!!
3.Pad level down, eyes at the numbers of OL & STAY LOW!!!
GOAL: Beat the OL out of their stance. By the time the ball reaches the  Center’s tail, we should be striking / attacking OL & gap @ v of neck!

Hand/Hat Placement – “Strike”

Hands explode from ground up -  Elbows in, thumbs up
Aiming for V of the neck / breastplate of OL – Be quick, inside hand replacement wins
Helmet attacks and stays to gap side V of neck -  critical on reach blocks
Feet must NEVER stop moving / win the battle of the hands!
Pad level down & STAY LOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
         -Separation

Strike- Zone @ full extension of arm, Lock elbows so arms are straight!!
Use power hand/trail hand technique to turn shoulders of OL.
Power hand lock out and stop pressure of OL using “Push-Pull” technique to turn OL shoulders & “Drive-Away” from block!!
Trail hand pull
Separation will occur up field

Escape
Violent pull – disrupt blocker from his responsibility
Rip under -  power hand press, trail hand under
Arm over – Power hand grab, trail hand over
Play to backside (away), squeeze 1 gap

LB Play - 3 - 2 Inside LB Play Talbot Defense

Inside Linebacker play in our cover 3 match. Our MLB will be a 3-2 player in our cover 3 match.   The MLB will play gap responsibility playing run 1st. Once the QB has cleared the depth of the RB(#3), and there is no run threat, the MLB will then adjust his drop to the release of #3.  1st job is to identify #3 and alert the outside linebacker to a possible "push" call.   #3 - inside release: MLB will drop on top of #3 maintaining a top down inside hip leverage. His eyes will move from the QBs upfield shoulder to proper leverage  of  #3. #3 - outside release to flat: MLB will make "push" call to alert the outside linebacker to come off his reroute of #2 and expand to flat looking for #3 to flat. MLB will then push to #2s release carrying vertical to top of his zone (12 yards). MLB will wall #2 (keep inside leverage) on #2 and ping-pong his head and eyes back to QB to identify QBs upfield shoulder & elbow. *Communication is vit...
